During the summer months we hold a weekly mêlée on Wednesday evenings from 6:45pm. Everyone is welcome - whether experienced or total beginners!! The idea of a mêlée is for the teams to be a random mix so everyone gets a fair chance. We play 3 games and you should end up playing with different people for each game. Pétanque is a 'warmer weather' sport so our first Wednesday night mêlée usually starts mid-April.
For those of us who are mad enough to play throughout the winter, we hold a weekly mêlée on a Sunday afternoon starting at 12pm. On a Sunday we only play 2 games as it is usually too wet or too cold!! During the winter, we play from November until the end of March.
The Club has a strong membership, which has grown rapidly over the past few years. Many of the members play in the various leagues, however it's not for everyone and those who simply enjoy the mêlée evenings are welcome to just enjoy those!!
Each year we hold our annual club events: an Open Triples Competition in May, a Doubles Competition in July and a Singles Competition in August/September. These competitions are for Club members only and have always been a success. We start the competition around 11:30am and finish late afternoon - depending on the quality of the finals!! We traditionally have a 'bring a plate' buffet style lunch and have been very lucky with the variety of food people bring - so far!!
As well as our Club events we also hold 1 other important competition. This is a day to remember the landlord who brought the sport to the pub. This is Henry's Day. We play a 5/6 game mêlée and the trophy is up for grabs by anyone who gets a bit of his luck on the day!!
The Wheatsheaf Pétanque Club has 3 teams in the BIG League for 2018 The Eagles in Division 1, The Falcons in Division 2 and The Harriers in Division 3. The BIG League matches are played on a Monday night at 7pm, except on Bank Holidays when they are played on a Tuesday.
The WPA League is a more competitive league and not for the faint hearted!! We will keep 1 team for 2018, Wheatsheaf A will play in Division 1. The WPA League matches are played on Wednesday nights at 7:30pm.
